In-flight entertainment is about to collide head-on with the mobile age: United Airlines announced the launch of a free, Netflix-like selection of streaming video content available to passengers boarding with a personal media device.
Starting in April, United passengers will be able to access “over 150 movies and nearly 200 TV shows” through the United app for iOS or the United Portal on your laptop’s browser. Purchasing in-air WiFi is not required to enjoy the entertainment or to download the United app.
“Most planes will be equipped with the new system very soon, and we’ll have it installed on most domestic aircraft by the end of 2014,” United explains. “We’ll begin on Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 747-400 and select 777-200 aircraft, followed by additional fleets.”
You can download the United app for iOS via the Apple App Store. No special download is required to enjoy entertainment via the United Portal on your laptop. Android devices are not supported at this time.
